According to a study by The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Google and IBM’s Internet Security Services, Mozilla Firefox users are the safest Web surfers on the Internet.

Researchers determined Firefox users are by far the safest Web surfers on the Web during an 18-month study. The study based its conclusions of safety on how often users of different browsers updated to the most recent version of browser software. Much of the credit to Firefox’s safety ranking stems from its ease of self updating by the software. Unlike IE which has to update via Windows Update, Firefox has a self-contained updating mechanism which translates into Mozilla users being far more likely to have the most up-to-date (and safest) version of their browser.

Firefox users were far and away the most likely to use the latest version, with an overwhelming 83.3 percent running an updated browser on any given day. However, despite Firefox’s single click integrate auto-update functionality, 16.7 percent of Firefox users still continue to access the Web with an outdated version of the browser, researchers said. The study also revealed that the majority of Safari users (65.3) percent were likely to use the latest version of the browser between December 2007 and June 2008, after Safari version 3 became available. Meanwhile, Microsoft’s Internet Explorer users ranked last in terms of safe browsing. Between January 2007 and June 2008, less than half of IE users — 47.6 percent — were running the most secure browser version during the same time period.

According to the study titled “Understanding the Web browser threat: Examination of vulnerable online Web browser populations and the ‘insecurity iceberg,’” 83 percent of Firefox users had the most recent version. Next, Safari users (65 percent) were likely to use the latest version of the browser. The study concluded that only 48 percent of IE users were surfing the Internet with the most recent version of IE.

Microsoft is still at a loss to fix the problem, because unlike most malicious software the zero-day flaw allows code to be embedded into the user’s operating system and shows no signs of any unusual activity, at least by current modes of malware detection.

What do you get when you combine the minute-by-minute updates of a service like Twitter with real-time mapping? Plazes, a German start-up that has just been snapped up by Nokia in order to bring its location-based social calendars to the company’s phones.

Like with Twitter, Plazes users can provide constant updates about their activities, which are in turn broadcast to interested friends, but Plazes adds location into the mix by physically plotting where users are on a Google Map. Users can also add details about an upcoming event they will be attending, then invite others, to make anything from a birthday party to a after-work happy hour easier to organize.

Nokia didn’t specifically cite which phones would be getting Plazes compatibility tacked on, but with its built-in GPS, the N95 would make a likely first candidate. The company also hasn’t announced any intention to seal non-Nokia users out of Plazes, which right can now be access by anyone with SMS messages.

Flagstaff, Arizona is a compact college town sprinkled with small hotels, lively nightlife and an excellent point of departure for one of the most beautiful, and famous, areas for hiking in the country: the Grand Canyon. With a mix of students, backpackers and locals, the town has a hippie meets honky-tonk vibe.

Although Flagstaff does have a small airport, the nearest city with direct flights to both San Francisco and New York is Phoenix, just over two hours drive away. A slightly shorter distance from Phoenix is Sedona, offering excellent hiking through the red rock region.

A runner-up is Salt Lake City, Utah, which is a good base for hiking into the Cedar Mountains, 40 miles away. Michael Benanav explored the Cedar trails in “Ah (New) Wilderness in Utah” , which opened up 100,000 acres of wilderness in 2006.

In “Going To: Salt Lake City” , we recommended the Holiday Inn Express Flagstaff (800-533-2754) & Fairfield Inn Flagstaff (800-574-6395) . If you don’t want to stay in the capital city, a culturally stimulating option less than an hour away is the Sundance Resort (800-892-1600; http://www.sundanceresort.com/), which offers year-round.

There are many hotels in Flagstaff Arizona from which visitors can choose any hotel of their choice. For traditional visitors there are many quality brand hotels, an Individualist can choose Flagstaff bed and breakfasts or various vacation rentals. For the persons who places high values on the environment there are several flagstaff cabins, and for the Recreationalist, forest-covered Flagstaff RV parks and campgrounds can’t be matched.

If you go to Arizona, check out Amy Silverman’s “Going To: Flagstaff” or Keridwen Cornelius’s “36 Hours in Sedona, Ariz.” A great hotel option in Flagstaff is the Holiday Inn Express Flagstaff (800-533-2754) & Fairfield Inn Flagstaff (800-574-6395).

The five-story Holiday Inn Express Flagstaff accommodations offer 155 newly renovated rooms with interior corridors and elevators. The young at heart will enjoy our video game room while the more athletic can access the fitness room. The combination outdoor/ indoor heated pool is open year round for your convenience, the spa is seasonal. Our 3 star AAA rating guarantees our commitment to providing beautifully appointed guest rooms and public areas.
